Fabric for Sustainability & ESG

Microsoft Fabric Industry Solutions

Microsoft Fabric Vertical Industry Solutions: Sustainability

Once you’ve deployed an instance of “Sustainability Solutions” in Fabric, the user has the choice to use either:

  • ESG data estate
  • Microsoft Azure emissions insights
  • Environmental metrics and analytics
  • Social and governance metrics and reports

In the ESG Data estate section, Microsoft describe the capability as:

This capability allows you to combine ESG data from various sources into a standard schema that provides data models for environmental, social, and governance records. The standardized data can then be used to compute quantitative metrics that meet disclosure reporting requirements such as CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive). Aggregated datasets can also be used in analytics, and can be accessed by external applications for other scenarios such as data audits and generation of CSRD reports.

Microsoft Fabric Sustainability - ESG Dashboard

The items deployed in this capability include pipelines and data lakes that transform, compute, and store data from its raw form to computed ESG metrics based on standardized ESG data models. The three data lakes are: an ingested raw data lake that stores data from external sources, a processed ESG data lake that stores harmonized data conforming to a standard ESG data model, and a computed ESG metrics data lake that stores computed metrics and aggregated analytical datasets.

In simple terms the capability allows you to

  • Ingest raw ESG data from numerous diverse data sources to the OneLake
  • Process it in a standardized way
  • Produce reliable ESG metrics and datasets for your reporting and other downstream applications
  • Use pre-existing ESG dashboards to surface your data with minimal time and effort

All of this functionality is tailored to help you deliver on your Sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) objectives, defined usefully by the British Business Bank: ESG.

Emissions Data

To help manage your Emissions Data, Fabric helps you to consume emissions data into your OneLake, and then create reports required for stakeholders, customers, and for downstream applications.

Pre-configured Dashboards get you started with reporting on your Emissions data and help you get to value faster. Some of the available output screens are seen here:

Environmental metrics and analytics

In the “Environmental metrics and analytics” section there are actually two data lakes, one for Ingested MSM Data, and the other for Aggregated MSM Data.

As ever the important “Fabric Shortcut” feature allows you to connect to the original data in its source systems, but still have it appear to be “In” the data lake, with super-fast processing available as though the data had been imported right in.

Sustainability Dashboards

The ready-to-use dashboards are already set up with features to monitor water, waste, emissions, an executive overview, carbon activities, data approval, and other essential features.

All of these features are created to speed up your journey towards meeting your ESG obligations and goals.
