Microsoft Data Warehouse, Business Objects & Power BI Case Study

Project Schematic Power BI and Business Objects

UK-based Property Management Company engage Comset to deliver Data Management, Business Intelligence and Operational Reporting to the Extended Enterprise

Background

Having commissioned a new Property Management System this well-known company engaged Comset to implement a new Business Intelligence and Enterprise Reporting application based on BusinessObjects. Because of time and cost constraints the initial solution was designed to run against the operational system delivering both operational and management reporting across the Enterprise.

When the operation of the Property Management System was outsourced to the software supplier, Comset were engaged to redesign the BusinessObjects Reporting application running against a newly delivered in-house Data Warehouse based on Microsoft SQLServer. Making full use of Comset’s data integration toolkit (CDIT) we were responsible for the design and build of the interfaces to the Property Management, Financial and Property Valuation applications.

Comset advised and assisted the client in moving to a new BusinessObjects licence configuration based on a combination of Concurrent Session and Named user licensing, the old licensing having been based on the old server-based model.

In addition to the delivery of the Data Warehouse, Comset were responsible for migrating the existing analysis and reporting to a new BusinessObjects based BI Analysis & Reporting application built off the new Data Warehouse.

Current Situation

The Data Warehouse and SAP BusinessObjects based Enterprise Reporting applications continue to deliver operational and management reporting to both internal and external stakeholders, e.g. Managing Agents with Comset engaged to deliver an enhanced support service for the software and application components within the operational system. This includes the Microsoft based Data Warehouse, the CDIT/SSIS data integrations and the BusinessObjects based enterprise reporting applications.

With an IT strategy centred around Microsoft technology e.g. the Azure platform and Microsoft software, more recently Comset have been engaged by the client to design and deliver operational and management reporting using the Microsoft PowerBI analysis and reporting toolset.

With our in-depth knowledge and expertise in the existing Data Warehouse, Comset has designed and built an additional middleware layer using SQLServer Views to replicate the functionality provided out-of-the-box by the BusinessObjects Universe tool.

In using PowerBI for the new reporting requirements, Comset has also been responsible for the design and implementation of a new security model to ensure the same access control is in situ going forwards.
