Industry
surveys suggest that as many as 70% of Data Warehouse initiatives fail.
And the reason is simple - they are built for the sake of building a data
warehouse - because it seems like a good idea to collect all the data you
might ever need, cleanse and transform it, and store it in one huge
galactic store. If you take that approach, probably 95% of the data will
never be accessed. So 95% of the build costs and ongoing cleansing and
maintenance costs are wasted. And that's if you ever get through the
project in the first place. Train 1,000 users how to access the data -
then monitor how many queries a day really go through. Don't be surprised
if you find that 90% of the users never go near it!
